Medication and nutrition are very important  after weight loss surgery.

Nutrition:

  1. Protein is super important to a healthy body and healing . Protein shakes are a huge help, especially since I cannot consume solids at this time. One has to be mindful of the sugar content though.
  2. Water is essential. Dehydration at this stage is a big deal so sips of 2-4oz of liquid (water, caffeine tee, sugar free drinks) is super important. The last thing anybody wants at this time is to end up in the ER and have to have infusions.

Medication:

Immediately after surgery, there are a few meds that are super important.

  • Lovenox (blood thinner). 2 Weeks of daily injections are required.  This prevents blood clots due to inactivity.
  • Prilosec  (anti-acid).  This will be taken for 6 months to help with reflux due to changes in  the stomach.
  • Miralax twice a day helps keep your bowels moving.  Very often after surgery, one takes pain meds and this leads to constipation.
  • Gas-x twice daily, this helps get rid of gas in the body.  Gas was used in my abdomen  to give the surgeon room to work.

For the rest of my life:

These will be taken for rest of my life.  Due to changes in my stomach,  malnutrition is always a concern.  Lab work will be done every 6 months to check levels.  Things like potassium, iron, calcium are very important to a healthy life.

  • Bariatric Multivitimin with Iron
  • Calcium Citrate
  • Biotin (helps with hairless due to quick weight-lose)
