Food stages

So I’m going to take on a little different format.   I’m going to go through the stages of  food allowed on my program.

Due to my BMI being over 45, I was on a 2 week pre-op diet. It consisted of the following:

  • 5 protein shakes
  • 2 fruit
  • 3 veggies
  • 94 oz water

This was to get rid of excess fat in the liver so the surgeon has room to move while re-routing my stomach.

Post op in the hospital I was given a full liquid diet,  they fed me runny cream of wheat,  chicken broth; light, sugar-free yogurt and water.   Thank goodness this was only for 24 hours.  Once I got home,  I drank plenty of ice water,  a few protein drinks and soup.  The goal for this week was up to 30 oz of liquid.

8 days post op, I had my first appointment with the PA for the surgeon.  All went well,  holes in my tummy are healing well.  I was told to move onto the puree stage of  the post-op diet.  This will last until Tuesday 15th.

  • Goal is 32 – 48 oz water in between food
  • 2 – 3 oz food per meal
  • Food consists of  the following:
    • Tuna (pureed tuna in the image above)
    • Chicken
    • Eggs
    • Yogurt
    • Fruit: incl. pears, peaches, bananas  and apple sauce.
    • low fat, sugar free mayonnaise
    • Veggies (cooked,  vegetable juice)

16 days post op I switch to a soft diet which is low-fiber.  This is 2 weeks and transitions me into real food.

  • Goal is 32 – 48 oz water in between food
  • 3 – 4 oz food per meal
  • Food will be similar to the above, but adding things like beans, melon,  fats are now introduced and much more cooking.
  • Ground chicken and turkey is allowed

Day 30 – eternity

This is when things get real,  water intake increases to 64 oz a day,    it is recommended 1 cup of water per hour,

  • 4 – 8 oz  food per meal.
  • 3 meals per day and 1-2 healthy snacks.
  • It is recommended to consume 60 – 80 g protein a day,
  • Vitamins are increasingly important as due to stomach being changed,  not a lot of vitamins from  food will be absorbed so supplements are needed.
    • Multivitamin (Bariatric type) (Taken twice a day)
    • Iron (once a day)
    • Calcium (Taken 3 times a day)
